WHY SWAY POLYBAGS?

At A New Earth Project, we are committed to ridding the world's oceans, lakes, and rivers of plastic pollution, and changing the way the product industry handles packaging is a major part of this mission.

Each year, a staggering 180 billion thin-film flexible plastic polybags are used in the fashion industry alone, with less than 3% recycled. This means the vast majority end up in landfills or, if improperly disposed of, they escape waste management systems and contribute to widespread pollution, harming wildlife and even contaminating human health.

While many polybags can and should be eliminated, they have become essential in supply chains worldwide to ensure orders arrive to customers in pristine condition.

Sway is a material innovation company that views the ocean not only as a victim of pollution, but as a source of the solutions. Seaweed is an abundant, fast-growing crop that can improve ocean health – creating habitats, boosting biodiversity, purifying water – while providing climate-resilient employment in coastal regions. Utilizing the natural polymers found in seaweed, the Sway Polybag mimics the way plastic looks and feels, matching the necessary performance criteria of traditional polybags.

By choosing Sway Polybags, you are helping build a plastic pollution-free future for our planet and coming generations.

  • How should I dispose Sway Polybags?

The Sway Polybag is designed for home and industrial composting. The material is currently pending TUV Austria Home and Industrial certifications, expected Q3 2025. Until certification, help contribute to Sway’s research & development by placing this bag in your home compost and reporting the results through this survey! Please note: this bag is not recyclable; dispose in regular trash if compost is unavailable.

  • Where does the seaweed come from?

Sway has trusted sourcing partners located all over the world, including in Chile, Indonesia, Maine, France, Puerto Rico, and many more.

  • What kind of seaweed does Sway use?

Responsibly cultivated macroalgae and extracts. Sway prioritizes diversification in their sourcing to avoid over-reliance on any region or species, and to support the positive impacts of expanded seaweed cultivation around the globe.

  • Does it smell like seaweed?

Nope! These bags are designed to keep items fresh, clean, and seaweed-scent-free.

  • Is it edible?

Nope! The Sway Polybag is designed to be composted.

  • What is the shelf life?

At least 18 months in cool, dry conditions.

  • Can it package food?

Not yet. The material ingredients are food contact-safe, but the Sway Polybag itself is awaiting compliance confirmation to ensure food stays fresh inside. Our hope is that we can keep refining Sway products to eventually package food.

  • Is it moisture resistant?

Moisture resistant – yes; waterproof – no. Sway Polybags can withstand some moisture (think: humidity, exposure to rain in transit), but are not waterproof or suited to package moist/perishable items.

  • What do the bags break down into?

Carbon, sugars, water, and small amounts of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (the 3 main nutrients plants need to grow!)
